KONCHESKY: WEST HAM UNITED CAREER REVIEWED
English left-back Paul Konchesky began his career as a professional footballer at Charlton Athletic in London. He was a regular in the first team until the 2002/03 season. A lack of first-team opportunities in his preferred left-back role forced him to ask for a transfer in the summer of 2003.
On the back of his transfer request, Paul Konchesky joined fellow London team Tottenham Hotspur on a one-month loan deal mainly due to the lack of offers for him. While he was at Spurs, Konchesky started playing regular first-team football at his preferred left-back position and his loan deal was extended for one more month and then until the start of 2004. The defender was recalled by Charlton Athletic after the club suffered some injuries to first-team players. He was also taken off the transfer list upon his return to Charlton Athletic from Tottenham Hotspur. At the time, Paul Konchesky wanted to move to Tottenham, but the transfer eventually didn’t happen.
West Ham Hnited signed Konchesky fromCharlton Athletic in July 2005 for a fee reported to be around £1.5m. He joined the Hammers on the back of a return of six goals in 168 appearances for Charlton. Paul Konchesky also had a return of no goal in 15 Spurs appearances while he was at the club as a Charlton Athletic loanee.
In his first season as a Hammer, Konchesky appeared in 45 games in all competitions as he played his part on the way to the 2006 FA Cup final. He scored one of the goals as Liverpool came from behind to draw 3-3 with West Ham United in the final thus forcing extra time and penalty shootout. The left-back missed his spot kick during shootout as Liverpool sealed victory via penalties.
After two seasons at West Ham, Paul Konchesky left the club to sign for London rivals Fulham.
